Community Garden Party!

The Oak Hill Jackson Neighborhood Association is inviting area residents to the launch of its Neighborhood Garden Project.

A picnic and seed distribution:  “A Community Garden Party,” will start at 6 p.m., Monday, May 12, at Poet’s Park, at the corner of 12th Avenue and Otis Road SE in Cedar Rapids, near Saint Wenceslaus Church.

The project is described as an open air classroom, where you can learn from a Master Gardener how to plant a vegetable garden in your own backyard. The group notes that with food prices up 40 percent this year, you can stretch your family food budget by gardening from May to October.

Any family in Cedar Rapids that would like to plant a vegetable garden in their own back yard is invited to attend. Organic vegetable seeds were donated to the  project to provide free seeds to any family ready to plant their own backyard garden. If you do not have a backyard, you’re invited to come anyway and they will find a place where you can have a shared plot with Cedar Rapids neighbors.
